Improvisation Lessons

Spontaneous musical creation can be peak human experiences. Some of my greatest experiences in life have involved some form of live music-making. I have studied improvisation as a vocalist and instrumentalist, and I have written my own curricula on improvisation. I believe any musician can be a good improviser with the right guidance!

Everything in this piece was improvised. It is a modified and slowed down form of Bird blues, which is a complicated chromatic bebop style of playing the blues. Of course I didn’t play jazz here, but it was a jazz form that I utilized in my own improvisation.

This is a prelude. Preludes are historically improvised, but then became a genre of their own. This one is all completely made up on the spot. Free improv.
